1. John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin

Seeing as the Kohlers made their name in plumbing, it’s no surprise that their bathrooms reflect their immense success. The six public bathrooms at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center were designed by six different artists, all of who attended the Center’s well-known Arts/Industry Program. Artist Ann Agee’s Sheboygan Men’s Room features an array of blue and white delft-style tiles that display images of water in all its incarnations.

2. Dolce and Gabbana Gold, Milan, Italy

Save your pennies for a trip to Italy, and make a stop at the Gold restaurant. Since understatement is not a major design feature for the Italian duo, you know the restaurant will feature some of their fabulous tackiness. The restrooms feature floor-to-ceiling golden bamboo reeds, mirrored vanities, solid marble counters and enormous gold mirrors. Each stall has its own plasma TV, as well.

3. Hi-Tech Digital Bathroom by Ideal Standard

Who knew that electronics and water could go so well together? The motion-sensor taps and flushing are just the beginning—you can watch television in the whirlpool spa as well! At the sink while you look in the mirror, get the latest news or listen to your favorite music, all controlled by the touch screen panels.

4. Shoji Tabuchi Theater, Branson, Missouri

This bathroom is like something out of the over-the-top Victorian era, complete with massive chandeliers and thousands of flowers. The women’s room has a fountain, stained glass windows, black Italian marble and gold fixtures in every granite and onyx sink. The bathroom is home to 80,000 violets that are replaced each month. The men’s room may not have as many flowers, but they do have a mahogany billiards table surrounded by leather chairs.

5. Public Bathroom at Kawakawa, Bay of Islands, New Zealand

We don’t know about you, but we typically avoid public restrooms as best as we can. This one, however, might deserve a visit. The public bathroom at Kawakawa is inspired by Gaudi, artist and champion of Barcelona. Architect and painter Friedensreich Hundertwasser constructed massive mosaics to cover the entire bathroom and windows. Light filters in through broken glass mosaics embedded in the wall, showing off the copper, cobblestones, sculpture and plant life that adorns this fabulous privy. Stalls are irregularly partitioned, bricked and crooked.

We hope these designs don’t intimidate you too much to start your own project! They should inspire you to try something amazing and wonderful for this oft-forgotten space—get creative!
